Encounter peacocks and monkeys during a stroll through these elegant and enchanting terraced gardens.

Sisodia Rani Palace and Garden is a serene royal retreat and formal garden that’s mostly overlooked by tourists. Come here for fresh air and a relaxing wander about the multitiered gardens. Be sure to stop by the palace to view a selection of interesting murals.

The palace and royal gardens were built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhas a quiet retreat for his second wife, who was known as Sisodia Rani. Here, she could enjoy some privacy and tranquility away from the bustle and gossip of the royal court. Fans of Hindi movies may recognise the gardens from the 1991 Bollywood movie Lamhe.

Wander through the gardens and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the queen’s former sanctum. Look out for interesting animals and birds as you stroll. Monkeys are often spotted swinging from the trees, while peacocks can also be seen strutting around displaying their colourful plumage.

The gardens are laid out in the Charbaghstyle, a common Mughal garden design that typically features rectilinear shapes and water features. As you walk around, you’ll pass by gurgling waterways, spouting fountains and well-crafted sculptures, as well as several decorative pavilions. Bring along a blanket and spread it out on the garden lawns. It is a delightful place to spend a few hours reading a book or even enjoying a picnic.

The two-story palace building is also worth checking out. Examine the colourful murals that adorn the outer walls. These paintings depict hunting scenes and mythical creatures, as well as scenes from the life of Krishna, one of the most popular deities in the Hindu faith.

The best time to visit the gardens are between October and March when cool breezes and pleasant temperatures ensure you can sightsee in comfort.

Sisodia Rani Palace and Garden is located 6 miles (10 kilometres) from Jaipur on the Jaipur-Agra highway. It is open daily and there is an admission fee. The gardens are occasionally closed for weddings and other private events, so check ahead of your visit to ensure the site will be open.
